The Camptown Cemetery Association has announced the beginning of its "Buy-A-Brick" campaign as an opportunity for Washington County residents to honor and memorialize loved ones. According to Association President, Eddie Harrison, you can donate a brick in honor of, or in memory of a loved one or yourself and/or your company.

Camptown Cemetery is an African-American cemetery dating back to the end of the Civil War. It was neglected for many years. In 2013, Mr. Harrison was able to get some people interested in its restoration. The Brenham Heritage Museum and Mount Rose Missionary Baptist Church were also instrumental in spearheading the effort. Since 2013, Camptown Cemetery has been cleared of is brush, trees and weeds and is now a very peaceful area with very pleasant and quiet surroundings. With the growth of natural grasses and some native Texas rose bushes, it is a wonderful place to come and sit on one of its benches and reflect on current events and past memories. This is just the beginning of the restoration process. Markers and family plots need to be repaired and restored. The entire cemetery needs to be fenced and the entrance needs to be identified and restored. A walkway needs to be constructed along Mangrum Road in front of the cemetery from the historic marker to the entrance.

All of this requires funds and community support. In the 3 years of work by volunteers equipment and supply costs have been covered by generous donations from several organizations and individuals. As a starting point, the money generated from the brick sales will be used to maintain and start the restoration process of the cemetery and its markers. The bricks themselves will be used as part of a walkway along Mangrum Road leading to the entrance for the Camptown Cemetery Historic Memorial Park.

The bricks can have two, three or four lines engraved with up to 20 letters per line. The bricks cost $40.00 for 2 lines and $50.00 for 3 or 4 lines of engraving. Please fill out the following order form and mail it, with your check made out to Camptown Cemetery Association, to the address listed. If more than 2 bricks are desired, add the requests on a separate sheet of paper and enclose it with this order form. All proceeds will be used for the cost of the bricks and work directly related to the cemetery restoration.

If you do not desire a brick but would still like to make a donation in any amount, it would be greatly appreciated. Donors of $250.00 or more will be recognized at a later point in our restoration process. Donations are tax deductible. You should also know the Camptown Cemetery Association is applying for grants to assist with the restoration and maintenance process.
